Zvandiri began in Harare, Zimbabwe in 2004 but has been adopted and scaled to 63 districts in partnership with the Government of Zimbabwe.
A dedicated technical support unit (TSU) leads on regional adaptation and adoption of the Zvandiri model, working with Governments and partners beyond Zimbabwe to integrate Zvandiri within their national response for children, adolescents and young people living with HIV.
Guided by partnership agreements, a standardised technical assistance programme and quality standards for paediatric and adolescent HIV, our technical assistance teams work with respective governments, local implementing partners and young people living with HIV to establish, implement, monitor and evaluate peer-led, holistic services within the health care facilities, communities and through digital health.
Learning from Zimbabwe’s example and in collaboration with WHO, Zvandiri has been adopted or adapted in 10 other countries in the region with over 3000 CATS, Young Mentor Mothers and Mentor Dads, supporting over 96,000 children, adolescents and young adults living with HIV.
